As part of Local Development Week, the Johnston Library in Cavan became a hub of colour, creativity, and community spirit with the launch of our new Multicultural Arts and Crafts Workshops. Spearheaded by our talented Ukrainian teachers, Yuliia and Luda, the series kicked off with enthusiasm, laughter, and an inspiring mix of cultural traditions.

The first workshop brought together children aged 6 to 12, from many different backgrounds, to create, share, and connect through art. It was a heartwarming reminder of the power of creativity to bridge language and cultural barriers. Whether it was learning traditional Ukrainian paper crafts or experimenting with patterns from other cultures, the children embraced the experience with open hearts and busy hands.
Parents and guardians watched proudly as little ones worked side by side, often swapping stories, colours, and a few giggles. The room buzzed with artistic energy, and shared joy.
At SICAP and the Ukrainian support project incredibly proud of Yuliia and Luda for volunteering their time and talents to make this vision a reality. Their commitment to nurturing cultural understanding through creative expression is a true gift to our community.
What’s Next?
These free monthly workshops will continue throughout the year, each with a new theme, new crafts to try, and more opportunities for young participants to celebrate cultures through art. Children of all nationalities are welcome – and encouraged – to join.
We look forward to watching this wonderful initiative grow, and to seeing more young artists light up the Johnston Library with their imaginations.
Stay tuned for next month’s date, and don’t forget to spread the word. Because when we create together, we grow together.
