Since 2018, the Drumgoon Old Graveyard project has been strengthened by the dedication and continuity of one exceptional participant from the Rural Social Scheme (RSS). Over the past several years, his commitment has been central to the development, preservation, and ongoing maintenance of this important local heritage site.
Drumgoon Old Graveyard holds deep historical and cultural significance for the community. Maintaining a site of this nature requires consistent care, sensitivity to heritage guidelines, and an understanding of the environmental considerations that come with working in such a protected setting.
Under the Environmental Maintenance Work measure of the RSS, the participant’s work focuses on:
* Grass and Ground Maintenance: Ensuring that the grounds remain tidy, accessible, and respectful for visitors.
* Hedge and Boundary Care: Managing growth around the site to maintain a clean, welcoming environment while protecting heritage features.
* Entranceway Upkeep: Keeping access points clear and in line with the standards set out in the local authority’s Heritage Plan.
These tasks, though practical in nature, support the long-term preservation of the graveyard for future generations and contribute significantly to the wider efforts to protect local historical sites.
This project is supported by Rialtas na hÉireann – Government of Ireland through the Department of Social Protection (An Roinn Coimirce Sóisialaí). Their continued investment in community-based initiatives like the RSS ensures that vital heritage spaces such as Drumgoon Old Graveyard receive the year-round care they need.
The dedication shown in Drumgoon is a strong example of how the RSS enriches rural communities, protects local heritage, and provides meaningful engagement for participants.
