Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD last week announced €8.7 million in funding to deliver 221 recreational based projects nationwide through the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS).

Cavan County Local Development along with Cavan County Council secured funding of €387,173 towards enhancement works on walking trails and cycle-ways and support for the marketing and promotion of our outdoor recreational facilities. Among these is the creation of a new looped walking trail in Mullahoran, and a feasibility study to explore the possibility of restoring the famous ‘Lake of the Cures’ at Loughanleagh Mountain in East Cavan, which was famed for its healing properties.
Our Rural Recreation Officer* will work in closely with the community groups that benefit from this announcement, ensuring that they are supported throughout the development and implementation of their projects.
Speaking following the announcement, Minister Calleary said:
“Investment in the outdoors is so important to us all from a physical and mental health perspective. I am very happy to be making this announcement today which will see over a wide range of capital projects developed and delivered all across the country, adding to our already impressive outdoor recreation offering.”
“The Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme continues to deliver on the commitments in Our Rural Future and the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy, ‘Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors’, and builds on unprecedented levels of investment in the sector in recent years.”
