Social Prescribing: One of CCLD's Newest Community Support Services with Peter Sexton

At Cavan County Local Development (CCLD), we are continually exploring new ways to support individuals, families and communities to thrive. One of the newest services being delivered through CCLD is Social Prescribing, an innovative approach that helps people improve their health and wellbeing by connecting them with activities, services and opportunities in their local community.

To introduce this important service, we are pleased to share a video by Peter Sexton, highlighting how Social Prescribing works and the positive difference it can make in people's lives.

What is Social Prescribing?

Social Prescribing recognises that many factors influence a person's health and wellbeing beyond medical care alone. Issues such as social isolation, loneliness, financial pressures, lack of confidence, unemployment, housing concerns or simply not knowing what supports are available can all affect someone's quality of life.

Through Social Prescribing, individuals are supported to identify what matters most to them and are connected with local community groups, activities, services and supports that can help address their needs and improve their overall wellbeing.

Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, Social Prescribing takes a holistic, person-centred approach that helps people build social connections, access support networks and become more involved in their communities.

How the Service Works

A Social Prescribing service typically provides one-to-one support to help individuals identify their goals and explore local opportunities that match their interests and needs.

This could include support to access:

  • Community groups and social activities

  • Health and wellbeing programmes

  • Educational and training opportunities

  • Volunteering opportunities

  • Exercise and physical activity programmes

  • Arts, culture and recreational activities

  • Practical community supports and services

The aim is to empower people to make connections, build confidence and improve their overall quality of life.

Why Social Prescribing Matters

Strong communities play a vital role in supporting health and wellbeing. When people feel connected, supported and included, they are more likely to experience positive outcomes for both their mental and physical health.

Social Prescribing helps bridge the gap between individuals and the wide range of community resources that already exist. By connecting people with appropriate supports and opportunities, the service can help reduce isolation, increase participation and strengthen community engagement.

A New Addition to CCLD's Community Services

The introduction of Social Prescribing reflects CCLD's ongoing commitment to supporting social inclusion, community wellbeing and local development across County Cavan.

As an organisation dedicated to helping people reach their potential and actively participate in their communities, Social Prescribing is a natural extension of CCLD's mission to create stronger, more connected and resilient communities.
