Students at St Mogue’s College in West Cavan have been taking part in a series of workshops designed to help build confidence in writing skills. The ‘Words to Music’ programme, delivered by Sandy Holland of Cavan County Local Development (CCLD), uses writing song lyrics to make the process enjoyable and inclusive.

The students also contributed to the writing of the music and decided to have a go at singing their composition themselves.

Sandy explains ”There is real value in learning writing skills in this way and the final product is a testament to the work the student put in”

The programme is a partnership between Cavan School Completion, Home School Liaison Officer and Cavan County Local Development’s social inclusion programme SICAP.

Aoife Fitzsimons of Cavan School Completion says “It has been fantastic to see the boys grow in confidence and express themselves throughout this program. They should be very proud of themselves for what they have achieved.”

Mary Mc Eneaney, Home School Liaison Officer at St Mogue’s College adds “The boys should be very proud of themselves; the finished song sounds fantastic. It’s a very catchy tune. It was great to get the ‘Words to Music’ Programme back in St. Mogue’s College.”

The quality of the lyrics written and performances by the students, none of whom had recorded before, was so good that the song is being released on streaming platforms. The group is called ‘The Cavan Stones’ and the song ‘The Road to Summer’ and can be found at this links:
