Cavan, 24 August 2025 — Over 300 people gathered at Cavan Rugby Club today to mark Ukrainian Independence Day, in an event hosted and organised by Cavan County Local Development (CCLD) under the SICAP Programme.
The day-long celebration featured a wide variety of activities, beginning with food stalls, children’s entertainment, and cultural displays that ran from 12 noon to 6pm. Families and community members enjoyed traditional Ukrainian cuisine, interactive children’s activities, and a vibrant cultural programme highlighting the heritage and resilience of Ukraine.
In the evening, attendees were treated to a live concert at 7pm, which brought the community together in music and celebration.
The event also included speeches from local politicians including Brendan Smyth, Councillor TP O'Reilly, Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr John Paul Feeley, and Councillor Áine Smith representatives of Ukrainian organisations in Ireland, who commended the strength and contributions of the Ukrainian community in Cavan and across the country.
The successful celebration was coordinated by Olga Hlebopaseva and Larisa Sakala, working with CCLD through the SICAP Programme, whose dedication ensured the smooth running of the event.
Speaking on behalf of CCLD, organisers expressed their gratitude:
“This event was about more than celebration—it was about community, unity, and recognising the invaluable role the Ukrainian community plays here in Cavan. We are delighted to have welcomed so many people to mark this important occasion together.”
